[00:09] For the next few decades, most of our electricity will come from burning fossil fuels.
[00:14] Burning fossil fuels dumps carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, adding to the greenhouse effect, and global warming.
[00:20] It's time we think about other sources of energy if we want a healthy and prosperous future.
[00:25] Renewable energy produced from sources that are naturally replenished like this wind turbine operation in Moorhead Minnesota is under serious consideration.
[00:33] We are familiar with hydroelectric power. It's been a renewable energy source for centuries. Now low-head hydro operations are beginning to compete with large dams.
[00:43] Water pumping windmills helped Americans settle the west. Today, advanced technology has boosted efficiency so much that in windy regions like the American Midwest, wind generated electricity will soon compete in cost with fossil fuel. And there's no pollution.
[00:58] In remote, sunny places, it's often cheaper to use photovoltaic cells, direct sunlight to electricity, than it is to string transmission lines miles from a central power station.
[01:09] And perhaps in some places we could grow fuels for electricity, called biomass energy. Burning plant and animal waste is cleaner than burning coal.
[01:18] As you can see, many clean, affordable energy systems are available for worldwide use right now. We could have a sustainable future without even the tiniest hiccup to the economy. The choice is ours.
