Downloading Images from DNGP Exercise 1 - Getting Images from DNGP Objective: Select and area of interest (AOI) and download images Task1: Selecting an Area of Interest (AOI) 1. Click to see a drop down list of the AOIs stored in your account.2. Select an AOI listed there. The DNGP viewer will zoom to that area- likely the area you provided with your registration information. (We will learn how to add more AOIs to your account later.) ![]() In the display, you will see a grayscale image at 1 meter resolution. This is a digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ) image created by the U.S. Geological Survey and hosted by Terra Server USA. DOQ imagery is not currently available for download at the DNGP website, but it can be accessed at http://terraserver.microsoft.com. Task 2: Selecting an Image 1. Find the image list at the right side of the page. The images are sorted by sensor type. The images listed under the sensor are sorted by date, the most recent being at the top. Clicking on a sensor will expand or collapse the list of images for that sensor. ![]() 2. Click to collapse the list of images for this sensor. The most recent images will be listed under . This stands for Landsat Thematic Mapper and is currently our main source of images for Team Express. The images listed under the sensor are sorted by date, the most recent being at the top. Notice the shading of the entries in the image list. The darker shading indicates the image only partially covers your AOI and the lighter shading indicates the image covers all of your AOI. 3. Click on the button to the left of the date of an image with the lighter shading – the button will then turn green. Then click to display the image in the DNGP viewer. Task 3: Downloading the image 1. Inspect the image. Is the quality satisfactory? If not, select another image with full coverage of your AOI. If the image looks good, click the button next to so that it turns green. ![]() 2. Click within the viewer and then "save" when you see the file download box to save the file to your hard disk. Save this file in a folder on your hard dist that you can easily find at a later time. The file will have a name something like this: allbands_1106844070_3027_091204.tif. This name indicates that this file contains all bands of a portion of Landsat scene path 30, row 27 and was acquired September 12, 2004. You may want to change this name to something more meaningful, such as a township or area you are familiar with, but keep the date of the image in the name and don’t change the ending. 3. Repeat Tasks 3 and 4 if you would like to download additional images. 4. When finished downloading, click to reset the display and log out of DNGP. Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded an image from DNGP! | Tutorials |
