C. Gregg Carlson - Professor - Plant Science, Cooperative Extension Service
C. Gregg Carlson
[More bio »]
Professor
Dr. Carlson is currently filling the position of Interim Plant Science Department Head. Dr. Carlson's other duties are split equally among research, teaching and extension activities. His areas of specialty include salinity & water resources. He coordinates with the SD Association of Conservation Districts to organize Soil and Moisture Clinics. He evaluates water analysis and recommends management practices to insure sustainable irrigation. He also presents educational material on minimizing the impact of agronomic practices on surface and ground water quality. He is also an educator for site-specific farming practices. |
David Clay - Professor - Soil Biogeochemistry
David Clay
[More bio »]
Professor
Dr. Clay is currently conducting research into the impact of physical stress on C and N cycling, the fate of N fertilizer in soil, management techniques to reduce nitrate leaching to groundwater and improve soil quality, and the development of mechanistic models to define these systems. You can visit the Precision Farming Homepage. (Click to view SDSU's Hyperlink Policy to learn more about Dr. Clay's research and outreach programs.) |
Sharon Clay - Professor - Weed Science, Department of Plant Science
Sharon Clay

Professor
The weed science program is many faceted. There are opportunities to conduct research in herbicide-soil interactions to limit herbicide contamination of off-site areas and to understand the fate of herbicides in the soil, vadose zone and aquifer. Understanding weed ecology in crop and rangeland systems is also an important component of the program. Nonchemical options for weed control including the use of crop rotation and biological control techniques also are developing as important part of the weed science program. Dr. Clay teaches the course, "Weed Science", that has a laboratory section to develop understanding of weeds, herbicides, and their fate in the environment. You can learn more about Dr. Clay's research and outreach programs at the Precision Farming Homepage. |

The ERC is the main outreach arm of the College of Engineering. Dalsted has been at SDSU for over 25 years and has been the Director of ERC for four years. Throughout his career he has specialized in applications of remote sensing for natural resources and land use/land cover studies. |
W. Carter Johnson - Professor of Ecology - Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape & Parks
W. Carter Johnson

Professor of Ecology
Dr. W. Carter Johnson is Professor of Ecology at South Dakota State University in Brookings. He received a B.S. in Biology from Augustana College (Sioux Falls) in 1968 and a Ph.D. in Botany (Plant Ecology) from North Dakota State University in 1971. Carter began his professional career as Research Associate and Research Staff Member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (1971-77), followed by 12 years in the Department of Biology at Virginia Tech. In 1989 he became Head of the Department of Horticulture, Forestry, Landscape, and Parks at South Dakota State University, a position held until 1995.
His research interests include river regulation and riparian forest ecology, climate change and prairie wetlands, seed dispersal in fragmented landscapes, and paleoecology (climate reconstruction using tree rings; Holocene seed dispersal and plant migration). His research program is strongly multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional. He was the recipient of the William S. Cooper Award from the Ecological Society of America in 1996 and the Best Paper Award from the International Association of Landscape Ecology in 1995 for his 1994 Ecological Monograph, "Woodland Expansion in the Platte River, Nebraska: Patterns and Causes."
He is a life member of the Ecological Society of America and has served on the editorial boards for Landscape Ecology and Wetlands. He has been certified as a Senior Ecologist by ESA since 1988. Between 2000 and 2004 he served on three National Research Council panels examining large U. S. rivers: Missouri, Platte, and Snake. |

Manager, Office of Remote Sensing
Education
M.S. 1994 Geography, SDSU
B.S. 1972 Mathematics, SDSU
Mary O'Neill is a research associate in the Engineering Resource Center, College of Engineering, at South Dakota State University. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from SDSU in mathematics and a Master of Science degree, also from SDSU, in geography.
She has completed several additional courses in engineering, computer science and statistics and several geographic information system and image processing workshops and short courses. In her position at SDSU she is involved in several projects involving geospatial technologies.
Many of her recent projects have focused on the utilization of these technologies -- geographic information systems, global positioning systems and remote sensing -- in precision agriculture and the K-12 classroom. In the past she was involved in the transfer of these technologies to scientists in several developing countries via SDSU's Visiting International Scientist Program. This program involved training of the scientists at SDSU as well as traveling internationally to present workshops. |
