Red River Valley Flooding - 2009
These pictures represent Red River Valley flooding derived from LandSat 5 imagery. They include overall views from space showing the snowpack, a detail view of Fargo/Moorhead, and insets of the valley north of Fargo.

Figure 1. Images acquired by Landsat5 TM satellite.
The image at left (taken March 18th) shows the significant melting that occurred in late winter, compared to the full snow coverage at right (taken April 3rd). The Landsat color combination used provides a clear separation between shallow water, deep water, and snow. The red line represents the state border.

Figure 2. Detail view of flooding through Fargo/Moorhead.
The red rectangle in the image at left represents the extents of the image at right. The dikes contain the river through the city limits, but the banks spill to almost ten miles wide north of the cities. (Note: The dark areas in north Fargo are cloud shadows, not flood waters.)
